As a practice-wide project architect, Henry is passionate about the reconciliation of complex project requirements to create dignified, humane, and innovative places. He has served as urban designer and project architect for several building and large-scale master planning projects especially those entailing the creation of dynamic architecture integrated with a strong urban realm.
Through his commitment to the impact of design, he leads the advancement of the firm’s service offerings in architecture, land-use planning, and urban design, while ensuring that regionally relevant solutions, quality, and project delivery service exceed Client expectations and are executed at the highest level of professionalism.
Henry also serves as PLANNING’s firm-wide Managing Director responsible for overseeing practice-wide strategy development, advancement, and operations, with a focus on financial planning, business activities, organizational performance, and the general daily operations of the Firm’s offices.
Licensed in both the United States of America and Kenya, Henry is an internationally experienced architect and leader with an extensive history of working across various project typologies and complexities. He is a strong advocate for the impact of technology in architecture and personally skilled in advanced Building Information Modelling using Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD on various project typologies and challenges including mixed-use developments, sustainable design exploration, and design research. Henry brings to architectural practice a strong arts and design perspective and holds a Master of Architecture degree from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville USA and Bachelor of Science, Architectural Studies from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale USA. He enjoys watching car reviews on YouTube – especially for the comparison of automotive design to architecture – as well as photography and geeking out on international geopolitical podcasts.
Mumo is an extensively experienced architect and serves as a Director at PLANNING Systems Services Ltd. Mumo’s career at PLANNING has focused on building design, urban regeneration, and sustainable development. He is also founding director of PLANNING Project Management Ltd, the group’s project and development management arm, and a trustee of PLANNING’s impactful award- winning Corporate Responsibility initiative: The Community Cooker Foundation.
Mumo has broad experience in projects of various types and scales including hospitality, retail, high rise office buildings, large scale mixed-use masterplans as well as project structuring in conjunction with client teams. He oversees PLANNING’s portfolio of projects in Kenya as well as Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.
Mumo’s career at PLANNING has focused on building design, urban regeneration and the impact and opportunities that sustainable urban development provides. Mumo is currently serving as a key leader towards the program structuring for the design and implementation of the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project working in conjunction with the Nairobi County Government and the Government of Kenya.
Mumo holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
As an extensively experienced architect and firm-wide Studio Director, Susan is responsible for setting up project teams, facilitating and coordinating the implementation of projects, negotiating briefs and project delivery strategies. She was integral in establishing PLANNING’s coastal region studio based in Mombasa.
Susan brings to each project and initiative a combined pragmatic leadership in design, project management, client management, and construction. She is passionate about mentoring project teams while expertly wielding candour, empathy, humour, and coaching to advance team performance.
She brings her experience and expertise in practical design and project management. She has been committed to enhancing effective client partnership in her projects. She works across all project delivery stages from conception to realization as an architect across various architectural typologies, varying from schools to residential communities, amongst others. Prior to joining PLANNING in 2010, she worked at two firms as an architect in Nairobi.
Susan holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Nairobi and is an ardent follower and collector of local artwork and furniture.
Michael is an architect, project leader and Associate Director at PLANNING where he is responsible for overseeing and working alongside clients, consultants, and the wider design team within the firm to ensure that projects are excellently delivered on time and that contractual obligations are maintained.
He is especially keen on effectively guiding clients on project status and strategy by bringing each client into the project front row and an extensive and continual conversation around each project’s goals, the design process, construction pragmatics such as design, trends, construction methodology, materials application, and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness.
Michael Kinyumu joined PLANNING shortly after his graduation. He has immense design skills in both sketching and building information modeling.
He worked on both small and large-scale projects, including a design proposal for a modern residential building at TATU CITY in Kiambu as well as leading the design, production, and construction administration team for a 21-storey bank regional headquarters high rise office building at Kilimani in Nairobi. In addition to his projects, Michael assists in the technical department as an Energy & Environment (sustainability design) architect as well as also assisting the technical and design team of the Community Cooker Foundation. He provides Building Information Modelling mentorship in the office. Prior to joining PLANNING, Michael interned in various architectural firms in charity and voluntary programs.
Michael complements architecture with community participation and champions certain Community Social Responsibility programs. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Jomo Kenyatta.
Elton is a Senior Architect at PLANNING. He is passionate about creating bold and inspiring designs for clients that raise the consciousness of the public. He brings to each project a fresh and unique evaluation of the appropriate way to deliver it within the framework of the client’s brief and aspirations.
Elton’s role entails assisting in design development and enabling realization of complex projects within time and budget. Elton’s unique interest and expertise is in the criticality and interface of architecture and social settlement, especially its socio-economic impact, with a particular focus on the importance of low-income/ social housing design and policy.
With each project, he seeks to ensure that the factors that govern and drive good neighbourhood, city, and community dynamics are preserved by the proposed new buildings or development; be they dense town-like developments, or suburban communities.
Elton’s design skills range from having very impressive research abilities, to exploring and understanding the transformation that digital design is bringing to the architectural field. Elton has been a designer of several projects that combine the creation of bold designs that integrate with a strong urban realm such as design for a pedestrian footbridge along Mbagathi-Ngong Road aimed at rethinking conventional aesthetics and functionality of a bridge. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the Technical University of Kenya.
Patrick holds a Diploma in Building (K.N.E.C) – Jeremiah Nyaga Technical Institute, Kenya (Formerly Rwika Technical Institute) and is an extensively experienced Senior Technician and Construction Manager.
After graduating in 2007, he worked closely with the District Structural Engineer Embu as a structural draftsman before joining a construction company where he worked as an assistant foreman for six months before joining PLANNING in August 2008.
With his extensive knowledge of building codes and technical standards, Patrick brings to each project expertise in the production and coordination of architectural drawing sets, specifications, and construction documents, including their circulation and consensus. He combines to this, experienced in surveying, conducting site inspections, and site meetings. This experience comes from producing technical documentation for buildings of all scales and project typologies including offices, hotels, factories, schools, a children home, and several private residences, including ‘hands on’ masonry and carpentry works.
While at PLANNING, Patrick has also had the privilege of assisting in the management of projects during the construction stages. Completed projects include the 25-storey KCB headquarters building in Upper Hill Nairobi, Nest Childrens Home at Gigiri Runda, Ellams Products Ltd along Mombasa Road, Braeburn Schools 6th Form at Gitanga and Muthangari Drive, staff apartments block at Garden Estate, Braeburn Nanyuki, Starehe Girls Dormitory, Muguku Tumaini School Dormitories, as well as several high-end private residencies.
Serving as a Senior Architectural Technician at PLANNING, Mutua plays a major role in the production of each project’s technical documentation and construction, with an emphasis in the power and value that Building Information Modelling brings to each project. Through his commitment to this role and associated technologies, he has helped PLANNING significantly improve the quality of each project’s resolution and each client’s understanding of the emerging project solutions.
Mutua is adept at overseeing all technical aspects and phases of the architectural production process. He oversees the development of design projects with high quality graphic communication, drawings, and 3D visualization. As Senior Architectural Technician and firm-wide Building Information Modelling champion, he is responsible for maintaining and coordinating the firm’s holistic use of BIM though the integration of Revit, VR, Rendering, and other 3D design applications.
The value to each project is a BIM workflow that ensures efficiency and continual improvement within a collaborative design process. He maintains and standardizes drawing content throughout production consistent with office procedures and standards; including construction drawing set management, maintenance and updates of studio best practices, file management standards, project digital set-up, digital compliance and ensuring that design teams can convert design intent into robust data-rich Construction Documents.
Prior to joining PLANNING, he worked as an Architect’s Assistant on various commercial and residential projects and specialized in conceptualization, visualization and document preparation for retail and hospitality outlets. Mutua holds a Diploma in Architecture from the Kenya Polytechnic and a Bachelor of Architectural Studies from Nelson Mandela University – South Africa.
As a licentiate Architect managing and based at PLANNING’s Mombasa office, Felix has developed a unique perspective when it comes to coastal architecture. He is focused on both conceptual design support through detailed design, plus construction administration for a variety of project typologies including commercial and residential projects.
Felix is adept at client management, and together with with senior project leaders and the firm’s principals/directors, developing projects from concept to realization, generating design studies and production documents.
Leon Mugambi is a dynamic and dedicated graduate architect whose expertise spans architectural design, corporate space fit-outs, and a deep proficiency in advanced design software. Leon earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Technology from Coventry University in the United Kingdom where he demonstrated an innate talent for design and a strong aptitude for technology integration in the architectural process.
Leon brings to each project an exceptional grasp of architectural design principles and a keen eye for detail. He is passionate about crafting innovative solutions across various types of projects, including corporate space fit-outs, residential developments, and commercial spaces. A standout feature of Leon’s skill set is his advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit modeling software. His ability to harness the capabilities of Revit not only streamlines the design process but also enhances collaboration within interdisciplinary teams. Additionally, his mastery of Enscape visualization software enables him to transform architectural concepts into immersive visual experiences, providing clients with a vivid understanding of their future spaces.
When he's not immersed in architectural endeavors, Leon is an avid enthusiast of international professional soccer. Whether it's cheering for his favorite teams or analyzing gameplay, his passion for the sport is contagious.
Ian is an experienced construction professional with experience in engineering and construction management. As a Project Manager, Ian’s career at PLANNING has focused on project financial management, value management, people development and information management. His
engineering background complements his project management ability by giving insight to the design process and procedure. As an engineer, he was involved in the design process of a variety of building types including a large-scale retail center, hotel, and corporate office buildings. Ian also has experience in construction management having worked with contractors in the early stages of his career on large scale infrastructure projects both in urban and rural areas. This included the Kibera Relocation Action Plan and the Rehabilitation of Kenyatta Avenue. Furthermore, Ian has expertise in built facilities management having worked as a property manager for a few residential units in Nairobi.
Ian holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Science in Construction Project Management from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.
As a seasoned construction manager of 12 years, Kipkorir Challan has a proactive problem-solving approach and a passion for architectural innovation in every project. Possessing a comprehensive understanding of construction methodologies, project management principles, and site supervision. He is adept at managing diverse teams and ensuring projects are completed within budget and schedule constraints.
With a meticulous eye for detail and a comprehensive knowledge of construction methodologies. He ensures the flawless execution of PLANNING’s projects through their various construction processes, by fostering positive relationships with his collaborative and personable demeanour.
Kip’s commitment is to the highest ethical standards, evident in his successful leadership of diverse teams and projects, from residential through to commercial and institutional projects. Through his strengths, he has been able to effectively oversee project planning, lead site meetings, site inspections, management of client and consultants’ communication during construction and post project completion and generating progressive project contractual reports.
As a key contributor to PLANNING’s delivery of clearly illustrated and annotated building and planning design information, William serves as firm-wide Visualization Lead.
He is responsible for bringing relevance to all graphic design, photography, and presentation material within the company; reflecting PLANNING’s design agenda, and especially celebrating the process, importance, and completion of each project.
As a Creative Copy Writer and Marketing Assistant, Dez is responsible for the development and creation of key marketing text and graphic presentations, for print/digital publications, website, and social media.
She is passionate about the mission that PLANNING upholds and how to tell the inspiring stories around each project and initiative that reflects that; telling graphic and written stories about design and designing experiences that connect with a broad audience of people, including clients, influencers, and the public.
David is PLANNING’s founding Finance Director. With more than 30 years of experience with the firm, he oversees the accounting and finance functions with a focus on strategic financial guidance and operational compliance.
He also liaises closely with the firm’s various Clients to ensure effective agreements and compensation to support unhindered project delivery. Key amongst his internal roles is to ensure that office operations are adequately supported thus allowing the leadership team to be of service to PLANNING’s staff and clients.
Moses is a Senior Accountant and Associate Director of Finance at PLANNING. He directly helps to manage the firm’s accounting, leads the integration of project delivery fee forecasting, supervises accounts payable, payroll and a number of other general accounting functions.
Moses joined PLANNING as a senior accountant in 2011 and has played a lead role in the preparation of audited financial statements, tax returns and managerial financial reports to support the firm’s board of directors.
He is also a passionate Chess and football player, supporting his local neighbourhood league since his primary school days.
Dennis is an Audit & Operations Accountant at PLANNING. Along with the wider Finance team, he directly manages the firm’s accounting with a focus on supporting daily operations.
Dennis also plays a key role in the firm’s annual audit and tax filings, weekly accounts payable, monthly payroll and a number of other general accounting functions.
Vicky Awiti is a certified Human Resources professional and has been with PLANNING for over 12 years. She serves as firm-wide Associate Director of Human Resources.
She has over her years at PLANNING, contributed to the development, implementation and updating of PLANNING’s firmwide policies, processes, and initiatives, that has been successfully used to mentor, grow, and establish the practice as a celebrated career destination.
Her oversight responsibility spans all areas of HR, including performance management, recruiting, productivity, and office staff facilities. She is an active member of the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM).
Eve is an extensively experienced administrative professional and serves as the Senior Administrative Assistant at PLANNING. She is a key support person to the firm’s Directors and outside stakeholders/ contacts such as clients and consultants at a high level.
She also oversees the firm’s bid management in collaboration with the marketing and visualization team; monitoring and managing bids and preparing submission documents and assisting with various other marketing-related tasks. She brings to each pitch a comprehensively honest and client-focused response.
With her enthusiastic approach to office administration, Edna serves as a Document Control Administrative Assistant at PLANNING. As part of the firm’s environmental sustainability values.
Edna oversees and manages the day-to-day paperless practice at PLANNING in its operations and design delivery; enhancing, applying, and enforcing PLANNING’s designated document control management system and standards.
Edna also oversees all hospitality functions within the firm, ensuring that especially our guests, but also our staff, feel welcome each and every day.
Chris serves as firm-wide Information Technology Manager and is passionate about digital transformations’ relevance and value, especially Building Information Modelling, in the architecture and construction industry.
He currently oversees and manages the effective linkage of software and hardware in ensuring seamless and very collaborative project delivery workflows as well as those of the finance and administrative support teams. Chris has most recently transitioned the firm to a fully cloud-based working platform.
Eric serves as Assistant Information Technology Manager. He supports the firm’s Information Technology Manager. He supports the firms digital mandate and strategy by ensuring the effective linkage of software and hardware to a collaborative project delivery workflow across all practice and operational entities. Eric has most recently played a critical role in the firm’s transition to a fully cloud-based working platform.
