Planning at 45

At Planning Systems Services, our story began 45 years ago in the unlikeliest of places. The scene is set in Nairobi's Industrial Area on 1st May 1978, the founding date when the practice's first offices were set up above a used car garage. Our mission was clear from the start: to impact architecture and building technology in the region and beyond.

Drawing inspiration from prairie houses and cozy cottages, within two years of its founding, Planning Systems Services achieved its first major success with the winning competition design and delivery of the highly acclaimed Lake View Estate, nestled among the trees of Spring Valley. In fact, our own studio is located at the edge of Lake View, allowing us to continue our mission.

With this momentum, Planning Systems Services embarked on a high-rise commission for the East African Building Society, which marked the beginning of many such projects. Fedha Towers became an instant success due to its unique shape and outstanding features, such as the moninga wood door paying homage to our African heritage.

Today, in its third generation of leadership, Planning Systems Services is determined and inspired to expand its national and regional impact through offices in Nairobi and Mombasa. We aim to pour our energy into the collaborative influence that architecture, urban design, and land use planning have on our surroundings.

As the world embraces the digital era, we are also adapting by implementing digital production tools that enhance our efficiency in architecture, construction, project management, and urban design. It's not just about the buildings; we prioritize creating positive interactions between people and their environments.

At Planning Systems Services, we understand the importance of both interior and exterior spaces in positively impacting people and the environment. This philosophy is exemplified in our most recent project, the Trade and Development Bank headquarters on Lenana Road in Nairobi, which revolves around three sky gardens and prioritizes airflow, innovation, and sustainability.Today, in its third generation of leadership, Planning Systems Services is determined and inspired to expand its national and regional impact through offices in Nairobi and Mombasa. Looking ahead, our efforts are focused on designing for a changing world. We aim to build resilience, address climate change, and consider all socioeconomic groups. We firmly believe that there is no place for slums, and everyone deserves dignified homes. Through projects like the ongoing Pangani Housing project and wider urban transformation initiatives such as the regeneration of Nairobi Rivers, we strive to create mixed-use opportunities and foster the development of mixed-income communities.

Ultimately, our aspiration goes beyond defining skylines. We seek to improve livelihoods by creating harmonious spaces that enhance human interaction with the environment.
