Recognizing the remarkable contributions of Egyptian architect May al-Ibrashy, she has been honoured for her exceptional work and perspectives regarding the intersection of community, heritage, history, and art. With high esteem for her city of Cairo, she pursues the dream of reuniting these elements, envisioning a more resilient community that enhances community within historic Cairo and its surroundings.
The Prince Claus Foundation recognized and awarded her valiant efforts in 2022. In September 2023 the Cairo Mobile Lab, in collaboration with the Prince Claus Foundation hosted a series of workshops, which underscored the pivotal role of community as the backbone of any society. During this week of workshops, May al-Ibrashy’s brilliant guests were creative, architectural, and anthropological minds engaged in a collaborative exchange of ideas. PLANNING was invited to participate in collaboration with the Go Down Arts Centre, which is currently in pursuit of similar goals in Nairobi. The workshops focused on identifying strategies to enhance existing communities and foster enduring bonds, emphasizing historic districts.
Aligned with May al-Ibrashy’s vision, PLANNING shares the belief in the significance of incorporating ideas and insights from those most affected by forthcoming urban changes. Recognizing that urban regeneration projects that touch on our built and cultural history extend beyond mere structures and landmarks but should and can be envisioned as ecosystems and havens tailored to their districts’ unique rhythms of life. We are accommodating the lifestyles of those directly impacted. The preservation of history, and culture, and the promotion of art in its diverse forms remain integral to the fabric of humanity. Serving as wellsprings of inspiration, entertainment, and mediums for transmitting values. These elements contribute to critical thought. As we move forward in our urban planning and design efforts, we are resolute in our commitment to preserving the old while providing reasonable artistic freedom for the new.
