The M-Pesa Foundation's academy is being established to provide education to boys and girls within the 8-4-4 National Curriculum, that are bright, but in need. This secondary level academy will cater for 960 students aged between 14 and 18 years, together with their teaching and support staff. It will consist of a state of the art co-ed boarding school, with each year having 6 streams of 40 students. Residential life at the academy will compliment and extend the academic experience and include a rich array of activities and leadership opportunities to develop well rounded individuals. The M-Pesa Foundation, whose mission is "Changing Lives" is determined that the academy be heavily technologically oriented.
The Mombasa Academy is the first in a series of educational Centres of Excellence to be built worldwide by the Aga Khan Network. Each academy expresses the architectural heritage and cultural identity of the country in which it is built. The Mombasa Academy has interpreted the Kenya Coastal Swahili style in a contemporary manner, with external walls of sawn coral punctuated with grille work of cast aluminium and red tiled roofed balconies.
PLANNING has been involved in a detailed design process. The schematics done by others and the contract supervised, to a completion of the new Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools for the Aga Khan Education Services. The phased project is ongoing.
Students enjoy a new purpose built boarding house, designed specifically for college students. Students have single bedrooms in a series of linked cluster flats. There are six students in each flat, with a shared lounge, kitchen and bathroom facilities. Each flat has a patio or balcony with outstanding views over the Rift Valley. The flats benefit from access to a shared communal common room and the end of each group of clusters is connected to a resident houseparent, who encourages the development of independent study habits required for A level study and beyond.
The cluster layout of the building ensures connectivity, security and plenty of natural day light, through the use of large windows. PLANNING was approached to design a Masterplan for the school's 5 year expansion plans that would see it provide world class facilities to bolster its reputation as one of the leading educational institutions within the East African region. The key buildings to be provided included a new senior girl's dormitory, new indoor sports centre, new sixth form accommodation as well as expansions and refurbishments of the existing performance hall, preparatory and senior school accommodation. In addition, the school required additional staff houses which PLANNING designed as individual 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units as well as additional classrooms.

Set on 20-acres, this consists of learning, music, sports and boarding facilities for students ranging from early years to A-levels. Braeburn Thika is currently located on a leased plot some distance from the new school. Growing numbers and the need for better facilities prompted Braeburn to acquire the new property.
Set on 20-acres in Bamburi, this consists of learning, sports and boarding facilities for students ranging from early years to A-levels.
